Heartburn is unpleasant. Those affected usually feel a burning pain behind the breastbone. In addition, there is often acid stomach upset and a feeling of pressure in the upper abdomen.

I have also known the pain for a few months. Read correctly – I am 9 months pregnant. That is also the reason why it was a little calmer with environmental thoughts in the last months. Today I would like to introduce you to the 5 best natural household remedies against heartburn in pregnancy that have helped me.

Gastric acid is important to crush the food in the stomach and prepare it for digestion. The stomach walls, unlike the esophagus, are protected against acid. When gastric acid enters the sensitive esophagus, those affected feel it as burning pain.

Especially during pregnancy some women suffer from heartburn, especially in the last third.

During pregnancy, the growing uterus increasingly presses on the stomach from below, thus pushing up the stomach acid. If food is added, the amount of space in the stomach becomes smaller and smaller. Parts of the acid stomach contents can get into the esophagus (reflux).

Eating small portions throughout the day, chewing thoroughly and eating slowly can help. You should also avoid hot spices, peppermint, coffee, sour juices, citrus fruits, carbonic acid, sugar and too much fat, as all these foods also promote heartburn.

The absence of carbohydrates, in particular sugar and white flour, has a positive effect on the opening phase in the last five weeks before delivery. Studies by Prof. Dr. Frank Louwen (Uniklinik Frankfurt) show that the absence of carbohydrates releases receptors for the hormone prostaglandin. The prostaglandins need about five weeks to shorten the cervix and dilate the cervix.

Sugar also refers to the fructose in fruit. However, there is nothing wrong with one or the other banana. It is particularly important to consciously avoid crystalline sugar and other sugar substitutes.

Please also omit honey and agave syrup (contains a lot of fructose). Agave syrup must also be imported from overseas and therefore makes no ecological sense. The same applies to coconut blossom sugar, rice syrup or maple syrup – all sugar varieties advertised as allegedly healthy alternatives that have a long transport route.

Natural almonds

Almonds contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, vegetable proteins and nutrients such as folic acid, magnesium and calcium. The polyunsaturated fatty acids (essential fatty acids) in almonds include linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid and oleic acid. Two further fatty acids are formed in the body from alpha-linolenic acid, also known as omega-3 fatty acid: Eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, which have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Vegetable proteins initially promote the release of gastric acid. The release of the peptide hormone gastrin stimulates the production of gastric acid. The pH value in the stomach decreases. The release of gastrin stops and the production of gastric acid decreases. The hormone gastrin is also supposed to increase the tension of the sphincter muscle from the stomach entrance, so that an increased reflux of stomach contents into the oesophagus can be counteracted.

Before and after eating, chew three to five sweet almonds (no bitter almonds!) to a pulp and swallow it – if necessary with some water. Alternatively, you can also eat almond paste. Would you like to make the almond paste yourself? Then mix 100 g unpeeled sweet almonds with 10 tablespoons of water and a pinch of salt to a puree. It tastes delicious with rye bread.

Almonds should not be eaten with known allergies.

Unsweetened almond milk

With light to medium heartburn, both chewed almonds and almond milk help me. You can buy almond milk in a Tetrapack or prepare it yourself. If you know me well longer, you know that I try to avoid plastic if possible. But since I don’t have a device with which I can prepare almond milk easily and in large quantities, I decided to buy organic almond milk, the unsweetened version. Now I have been drinking a small glass of unsweetened almond milk for breakfast and dinner for a few days.

The unsweetened taste took some getting used to in the beginning, but already after one day the unsweetened almond milk tasted very good to me.

Fresh potato juice

Around 100 years ago, the Zurich physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner recommended the healing effect of freshly squeezed potato juice on stomach complaints. The consumption of fresh potato juice can neutralise gastric acid. This is due to the starch it contains. Unlike milk, the effect has been scientifically proven (Chrubasik and Chrubasik, 2005).

You can prepare the potato juice fresh with a juicer. To do this, wash the (organic) potatoes, but do not peel them. Make sure that you use first-class aseptic potatoes without green spots (steroid alkaloids, including solanin and chaconin) and without brown rot. The juice must be drunk as quickly as possible after preparation, otherwise it will oxidise and discolour.

Alternatively you can buy potato juice in bottles. I use the organic direct potato juice from Alnavit. There are no side effects to fear. Therefore, the potato juice is safe to use during pregnancy. Drink 5 ml of potato juice 3-4 times daily and another 10 ml before going to bed.
